Skunk Trapping – How To Trap a Skunk

Mar 17, 2011

Skunk Trapping

Skunks are a major problem around a house when they decide to put their den under or around your house. Generally they will nest up to have their young and it might be under your house, patio or deck. Skunks breed in February or March and have a gestation period of 63 days. The young are born in April or May and the average litter contains about six young with litters ranging from two to ten. Young skunks remain in the nest from six to seven weeks before they start accompanying their parents.

Skunk Bait Essence

Trapping: Skunks are active both day and night and seem to be most active during the late evening and early hours of the night. They den up in groups during the winter. #1 Long Spring, #1.5 Coil Spring Leg Trap or a Large Animal Cage Trap are the best methods of trapping and removing the skunk. Skunks are readily trapped near their den sites. They usually dig their own dens, often in brush and heavily grassed areas, and a den site will often be used year after year. An active den can be located by the presence of numerous small trails in the vicinity of the den, by the faint odor present, and by the general appearance on the den. Conceal your trap in one of the entrances to such a den and cover it lightly. Place the trap far enough away from the den so that you will not be faced with the problem of having to drag the trapped skunk out of the den.

Skunk Lures and Baits: Skunk Essence, Meat scraps, fish, poultry offal and feathers, animal carcasses such as rabbit, muskrats, ground squirrels, skunks, etc. Meat used for skunk bait need not be fresh.

Cage Trapping Tips: When trapping skunks with a cage trap remember once you trap him then you will have to move him without getting sprayed. Very carefully! Skunks spray when they are frightened. To move a skunk in a trap, quietly drop a sheet over the trap, pick it up gently without shaking or jerking. In order to spray, skunks have to raise their tails, haunch up and aim. If the trap is low, and the skunk is unable to to raise their tail or turn their back to you, they most likely won’t spray. Good Luck !

Skunk Under Your House: Here are some steps to get a skunk out from under your house.

1. Seal all possible entrances along the foundation, but leave the main skunk burrow entrance open. Note: At this point you can also place a trap at the entrance to trap the skunk when he leaves.

2. Sprinkle a thin layer of flour 2 feet in circumference on the ground in front of the opening.

3. After dark, examine the flour for tracks that indicate the skunk has left to feed. If tracks are not present, reexamine in about an hour.

4. After the den is empty, cover the remaining entrance immediately. Cover all openings with wire mesh, sheet metal or concrete. Bury fencing 1 1/2 to 2 feet in areas where skunks could gain access by digging.

5. Reopen one of the entrances the next day for 1 hour after dark to allow any remaining skunks to exit before permanently sealing the entrance particularly in the months of May and June when baby skunks may still be in the den.

6. Apply Critter Ridder Skunk Deterrent around the house to keep the skunk away.
