Selecting The Right Egg Incubator

Jun 23, 2008

I would like to use this post to help anyone that is looking for an incubator best select the right one for their situation. We get calls everyday from every day folks that are confused when trying to select the right incubator. I am going to try to explain the best I can the differences in each incubator we currently offer.

Eggs: Please get your incubator in hand before you buy your eggs. Many people will get their eggs and the incubator might not come for 5-7 days and their eggs are close to being too old. Most eggs will stay fertile up to 10 days. Also it takes an incubator 12-24 hours to get to a good constant temperature. Some of the exotic eggs are expensive and we do not want you to have to throw them away.

Chick Bator Egg Incubator
Chick Bator Egg Incubator: The Chick Bator Incubator is a great incubator for the individual that needs an incubator at an economical price. Many people prefer this incubator if they are going to use it just a few times for a science project or to hatch some chicken, quail, duck, goose etc. eggs they found. This incubator doesn’t look like much but it has a very good hatch rate and our customers have been very pleased with this incubator. I would only recommend this incubator for the casual user. If you need an incubator that has the option of an automatic egg turner I would recommend the incubators below. The Chick Bator Incubator’s eggs have to be turned manually. Price Range $19 - $25

Still Air Egg Incubator Still Air Egg Incubator: The Still Air Incubator holds 30 eggs without an egg turner and 42 with an egg turner. This incubator does not have a circulated air fan kit installed ( can be installed at a later date ) so we recommend using this incubator in a place where the temperature does not fluctuate up or down. Everything is identical with the Still Air Incubator and the Circulated Air Incubator except for the fan. Features two 4″ x 8″ viewing windows - ideal for educational purposes - and solid state thermostat control that can be adjusted manually with a turn knob located at top of incubator, thermometer, and moisture rings. The Egg Turner for this model is optional. You can turn the eggs manually without the turner or you can purchase the turner so you don’t have to worry about turning the eggs. Generally you get a slightly less hatch rate without the fan kit installed. Price Range: $50 - $55

Hova Bator Large Window Incubator Circulated Air Egg Incubator: Both Circulated Air Incubators have the same features except for the window on top of the incubator. The 10200 Little Giant Incubator features two 4″ x 8″ viewing windows where the Hova Bator 1583 Incubator features one large window on top for viewing. The large window on the Hova Bator 1583 is ideal for classroom work, science projects, advertising and promotional work, and for group observation of the hatching processes. If you are looking the the same performance but do not want to pay the extra for just a larger window, I would recommend the 10200 Little Giant Incubator. Both egg incubators perform at the same level and both have the option of an Egg Turner.

Both Circulated Air Egg Incubators feature a solid state thermostat that can be adjusted manually with a turn knob located at the top of the incubator, thermometer, and moisture rings. Price Range: $78 - $100

Circulated Air Egg Incubator With Thermostat: The Hova Bator Incubator with Electronic Thermostat incubator is great for situations where there will be temperature fluctuations where the incubator is kept. All parts are the same as the Hova Bator Circulated Incubator except the Thermostat. Egg Turner is optional. Price Range: $160 - $180

Circulated Air Egg Incbator For Overseas Use: The Hova Bator Circulated Air Egg Incubator 220 Volt is for our customers who use the incubator overseas on a 220 outlet. If you are going to use your incubator in the US I do NOT recommend this incubator. All specifications are the same as the Hova Bator 1583 except for the plug. Price Range: $150 - $200

1502 Sportsman Cabinet Incubator Cabinet Egg Incubator: The Cabinet Egg Incubators are for large scale egg incubation. We recommend the 1502 Sportsman Egg Incubator. This incubator has 3 trays for turning and a hatching basket at the bottom ( so you don’t have to buy a hatcher incubator ) The turning trays can be manually turned off so the can be used to hatch the eggs. All cabinet incubators feature an accurate digital thermostat with LCD Display of Temperature and Humidity. An on-board computer monitors systems and the environment every second to keep itself updated and to share this data with you. Electronic egg turning control, audio/visual indicators and a standard easy view door highlight a number of new features.

The unique feature of this incubator allows the breeder to set the eggs each week or so and then hatch the oldest setting eggs at the same time. Settings are rotated among the three turning trays so that the hatching tray can accept the eggs from one of the setting trays each cycle. Another option is to set all of the trays at one time and at the end on incubation, level all of the setting trays to use all of the trays as hatchers. Total Capacity with Plastic Trays (Not Included) 1368 Quail Eggs, 216 Larger Eggs (Ducks,Chickens). We recommend purchasing the plastic egg trays for cabinet incubators.

This incubator includes:3 turning trays & 1 hatching tray with cover - 1 #3018 dial thermometer/hygrometer - 1 moisture pan with 2 wick pads - Samples of paper egg trays for quail, chicken/duck (1 each) - 1 Aluminum clean out pan - Instruction booklet * 1 #3256 Pre-Set Electronic thermostat, and 1 alternate #3122 wafer thermostat Size:30.25″ Deep 15.75″ Wide 31.75″ High

If you are serious about incubating egg and want an incubator that provides a great hatch rate then I would recommend a cabinet incubator. These incubators are my personal favorite because do not get any complaints or problems regarding these incubators. The only complaint I have is that I cant get them to our customers any quicker than 2 weeks. Price Range: $560 - $650
